Here’s a chance for your students to create custom gingerbread boys and practice
subtraction at the same time.
Each gingerbread boy has a subtraction fact (without the answer, of course) printed
on their “feet” and a certain number of “buttons” on their torsos. Students are to
deduct a number of buttons (as stated in the subtraction fact) from the total number
of buttons on the gingerbread boy. This is done by crossing off buttons.
The student can easily see how many buttons are left (those that are not crossed off).
Now all that’s left to do is to look at the reference chart that shows the “Gingerbread
Boy Code” to determine which face will go on the gingerbread boy.
The Gingerbread Boy Code helps the student customize the gingerbread boys.
The answer/difference (number of buttons left) will match a number on one of 9
different gingerbread boy faces. The student will pick the match, cut it out, and glue it
to the head of the gingerbread boy. No more “faceless” gingerbread boys!
Originally intended for centers, but can be whole class/small group activity too. The
“figuring out” for how many parts to print out per child has already been done for you.
Answer sheets are provided as well. I want to make this easy for you! Don’t do all task
cards or worksheets at once. Use only 2 a day, and the activities should last 1 week or
more. This resource could be used in many other ways.
