Mollie People help your little people learn how to subtract with regrouping!
Start with "Can You Subtract?"
With this page, students explore when they can subtract. Use this page in a sheet protector and with a dry erase marker. Students pull out two number cards and place them in the large black boxes. If the number in the top box is larger than the number in the lower box, then students put a "YES" card in the Yes or No question box. If the number on the top is smaller than the one on the bottom, students put a "NO" car in the question box. Then, clear the mat and pull out two new numbers and repeat process. Practice this process individually on the follow up sheet by rolling dice for the two numbers.
Next, use the "Subtraction with Regrouping" mat (also in a sheet protector) to instruct students on the process. Mollie People give hints to help with the process. See my example page for how to use the mat. I have included two versions--one which uses dot boxes to subtract and the other that uses touchpoints.
Finally, students can practice the process on individual paper/pencil practice sheets without hints from Mollie People.
