Subtractive / Reductive Charcoal Drawing Intro Lesson #1 from Art Ed Connection.

Lesson Description:
In this lesson students are introduced to a fun alternative method of creating art, subtractive or reductive drawing. Using charcoal and other media students will engage in creating a still life art piece using this the subtractive drawing method. This lesson includes a unique and engaging approach to introducing this technique by slowly bringing an unknown image into focus so students are forced to truly observe to find every small detail as they draw.

Subtractive Drawing Lesson 5 (subject matter: Fruits & Dishes still life)

* Note: The object or subject matter intentionally does not appear anywhere on the lesson slides so that your students are only able to draw what they truly observe rather than what they may assume is there. For example, we have all seen an apple so when faced with the challenge of observing an actual apple while drawing it we may even unintentionally start to draw an apple from memory rather than the apple that is actually in front of us.
