Learning targets are an amazing way to help your students take ownership in their own learning process. But then what? Show your students exactly HOW they will be successful at meeting their daily, weekly or unit long objectives. Each of these ready to go success criteria are aligned to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) for fourth grade. They explicitly tell and/or show your students different ways to be successful in meeting their learning targets. They come in both color and black and white, so you can choose what works best for you. They help your students understand each step in the process of meeting the specific standard they are working on.

Now they’re ready to be used over and over, year after year! The standard is written in the lower right corner, so it’s quick and easy to find your success criteria in seconds. ***UPDATE!! I have updated the success criteria to include an editable page. This way you have the option to make the success criteria a little more personal to your teaching style or needs based on the groups of students you have from year to year. Please note that the color, fonts and sizes are the same, but the alignment and other formatting may be different. The spacing between each criteria will vary based on how much text you include in each section. The editable criteria will be very similar, just not exactly identical.

NGSS4-ESS2-1
Make observations and/or measurements to provide evidence of the effects of weathering or the rate of erosion by water, ice, wind, or vegetation. Examples of variables to test could include angle of slope in the downhill movement of water, amount of vegetation, speed of wind, relative rate of deposition, cycles of freezing and thawing of water, cycles of heating and cooling, and volume of water flow. Assessment is limited to a single form of weathering or erosion.
NGSS4-PS4-3
Generate and compare multiple solutions that use patterns to transfer information. Examples of solutions could include drums sending coded information through sound waves, using a grid of 1’s and 0’s representing black and white to send information about a picture, and using Morse code to send text.
NGSS4-ESS3-1
Obtain and combine information to describe that energy and fuels are derived from natural resources and that their uses affect the environment. Examples of renewable energy resources could include wind energy, water behind dams, and sunlight; non-renewable energy resources are fossil fuels and fissile materials. Examples of environmental effects could include loss of habitat due to dams, loss of habitat due to surface mining, and air pollution from burning of fossil fuels.
NGSS4-ESS3-2
Generate and compare multiple solutions to reduce the impacts of natural Earth processes on humans. Examples of solutions could include designing an earthquake resistant building and improving monitoring of volcanic activity. Assessment is limited to earthquakes, floods, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions.
NGSS4-ESS2-2
Analyze and interpret data from maps to describe patterns of Earth’s features. Maps can include topographic maps of Earth’s land and ocean floor, as well as maps of the locations of mountains, continental boundaries, volcanoes, and earthquakes.
