All of my lessons incorporate the four C’s of teaching: Collaboration, Communication, Creativity and Critical Thinking. These four elements are at the core of the Common Core Standards. You will find all of these elements in this lesson, from having the students work with a partner or in groups, to students sharing aloud, to creating a visual of the concepts, to thinking critically about what it means to be successful in their future and then detailing that on paper.
This lesson takes one day (class period) on average to complete. It can be taught as part of a larger unit on Transcendentalism or as a stand-alone unit. The only text students need is Emerson’s definition of success which is included in the lesson outline. However, students will need some knowledge of or access to Transcendental beliefs.
This lesson plan includes:
1. “Success” Outline – Student Handout - journal on conformity, outlining of essay, group discussion, mini-essay
2. Appendix – List of Common Core Standards covered in this lesson
