Suffix Trading Cards! This is a set of 20 suffix definition cards I created to help students recognize suffixes and memorize their meanings. By helping your students memorize the meanings of prefixes and suffixes they’ll have a much easier time comprehending difficult words they come across in their reading. This is one of the best vocabulary building exercises I’ve found. This product is also available with two other similar ELA products in the Prefix, Suffix, and Root Word Cards Pack
This Suffix Trading Card Set includes:
• 20 suffix flashcards
• 12 blank flashcard templates for students to add suffixes to as they come across them in their reading and writing
• Bookmarks with a list of suffixes, their definitions, and examples of words that use the suffix
• A template for a labeled box that students can cut out, write their name on and color to store their prefix cards in.
I tried to make these cards more engaging for students by designing them to look like trading cards. To make these cards I print them out back to back on the copy machine using card stock so they look and feel like real trading cards. Printing them out on regular paper works also.
The front of each card has the suffix as well as a space for students to sketch a picture or symbol to help them remember it. Allowing students to draw pictures or symbols to help them remember the prefix (non-linguistic representation) is a research-based strategy for increasing student achievement that I’ve seen work again and again in my own classroom.
The back of each card has the definition of the suffix as well as an example or two of words with the suffix in them. There is space to either write the definition of each example word or add more examples of words that use the prefix depending on the teacher’s preference. I also included 12 blank cards to print out for students so they can make more cards if they find more suffixes they want to study.
The importance of memorizing and using suffixes is mentioned in the Common Core State Standards under language for vocabulary acquisition at almost every grade level.
Just one example of this is the third grade language RF.3.3a which states, “Identify and know the meaning of the most common prefixes and derivational suffixes”.
