Product Description
This is a student lesson based on the principles of Orton Gillingham which includes a multisensory approach.

Students will address reading, vocabulary, comprehension, writing and structural analysis skill building, using the suffix "-ment."

Students benefit from repeated exposures of the suffix "-ment" in this lesson. The importance of review and repetition to internalize the meaning of "-ment" is necessary to support student comprehension development.

This suffix, when added to a verb, becomes a noun. Students need to understand this concept. Further, students need to develop the ability to break multi-syllabic words into syllables.

Students need to engage in this skill with automaticity, so that reading fluency is maintained, not decreased. Fluency is a reflection of a student's ability to recognize words and comprehend simultaneously.

The focus on reading and writing skill building, using this suffix, supports a deeper comprehension for the student.

Students will "break down" the "-ment" words using Orton Gillingham syllabication strategies. This activity strengthens decoding skills.

Additional benefits include brain pathway development in the following areas:

Working Memory
Long Term Retrieval
Word Memory Retrieval
Processing Speed

Why is this lesson listed for numerous age groups? There are students who are not at grade level and will benefit from the opportunity to develop this skill. Other students benefit from learning the skills for increased knowledge development. Finally, older students, including adult learners can use this lesson to strengthen reading and writing skills.
