Here are four wonderful worksheets that will give your students practice in the structural analysis of suffixes along with practice in the using sentence context. Each worksheet has directions at the top, and 3 of the 4 worksheets provide examples to help students complete the pages.
The 1st worksheet gives students practice in making new words by adding the suffixes:
ly, ful, ness, y, less, er, and est. These endings are shown at the top of the page. Then, students add those suffixes to unfinished words in ten different sentences.
The 2nd worksheet deals with adding ing to words that end in e. Students are given ten sentences. Before filling in the blanks of each sentence, they look at the word boxes to the right, containing the root (or base) words. Having been shown to drop the final e of each root before adding ing, they write the correct ing words on the blank lines of the ten sentences.
The 3rd worksheet has students work with the plurals of words that end in y. With sample words at the top, the rule they follow is: With words that end in y, drop that y and add ies which makes the word mean more than one. Each of the eight sentences has a word box to the right. Those words are the ones in which students will drop the y and add ies making then correct plural forms for eight words that they put on the blank lines in the sentences. The 4th and final worksheet is a practice review of the suffixes and endings. Once again they get a word box after each of twelve sentences. Each word in the box is a root (or base) word. They must add the correct suffix to the word before they put it on the blank line in each sentence. This last page could be used as more practice, a review or perhaps a quiz. Altogether there are 40 sentences with which the students have to add the suffix on the blank line, or write the new word with its correct suffix. Since the words they fill in must make sense, these worksheets teach using context as well as structural analysis of words that have endings and suffixes. After they’re done, students could use the answer key to self-check their work, unless you want to check them yourself. The 5th page is the answer key.
