Prefixes and Suffixes are affixed to the beginning or end of a root word and add information. Prefixes are added to the beginning of a root word as in reread with the prefix “re” meaning to do over. Suffixes are added to the end of a root word and can change the word’s plurality, tense or even form a new word.
The two most common prefixes are “re” and “un”. These two prefixes are important for beginning spellers to learn because they appear frequently and are easy to understand. “Re” means again (redo) or back (repay). “Un” means not (unreal) or reverse/opposite (undo).
Some suffixes are inflectional suffixes which create different forms of the same words as in help, helped, helper, helping. There are only a few, but they are used often: -s, -es, ies, -s, -ed, -en, -ing, -er, -est, ‘t
Other suffixes are derivational suffixes; these change the meaning of the word as in helpless, helpful, and helpable. These suffixes include: ism, -ist, -ful, -able, -ation, -ness, -ment, -ify, -fy, -ity, -ly, ise, -ize
One of the important facets of working with prefixes and suffixes is to discover the general meaning of each.
Of course, all word study is based on the continuing assessment of students’ individual needs.
