Learning Objective

Students will determine the meanings of words that contain the suffixes -ful, -less, -er, -est, and -able.

Description

Are you looking for an introduction PowerPoint for suffixes? If so, this highly interactive PowerPoint may be exactly what you are looking for! It is fully animated as well. Answers do not appear on the screen until the teacher clicks the mouse. It even includes a PowerPoint companion handout so that students can write on the handout, recording their answers, as you progress through the PowerPoint! The companion handout is available in a printable format and a digital format. The digital handout is compatible with Google Slides.

The PowerPoint contains the following format:

Slides 1-8: Introduction

-- introduce the terms "affix", "prefix", and "suffix"

-- includes an explanation of why the root word is "fix and how it's related to the meaning of the words!!

-- includes a mnemonic device for remembering that a prefix comes at the beginning and the suffix comes at the end!!

Slides 9-11: The meaning of -ful

Slides 12-16: The meaning of -less

Slides 17-19: The meaning of -er as "more"

Slides 20-23: The meaning of -est

Slides 24-31: The meaning of -er, -or, and -ist as "a person who"

Slides 32-35: The meaning of -able

Slides 36-60: Practice Slides

-A sentence is provided.

-Students write the word with a suffix from the sentence and the meaning of the suffix on the PowerPoint companion handout.
