In this packet, you will find vocabulary words sorted by common suffixes. The first set of words contain the following suffixes.
-tion, -ance, and -ence, -dom, -ity
These are ideal to use at the beginning of the school year. You can review study skill strategies by making flashcards to practice spelling and leaning definitions. Since the words are separated by suffixes, they are grouped by parts of speech. All of these words are nouns which offers an opportunity to review parts of speech and their slots in sentences.
Students will look up definitions and create their own sentences. Quizzes are included with answer keys. For the quizzes, you read aloud the vocabulary word from the answer key. Students write the words in the boxes numbered 1-10. For the sentences, you select five words and write the number of the word on the board. Students then complete the quiz on their own -- filling in part of speech, matching the word to the definition, and writing sentences.
When students are composing sentences for the quizzes, it's a great place to include weave in other parts of what you're studying. For example, if you're reviewing possessive nouns, students would need to include and label possessive nouns in their sentences. Or ask students to vary how they start sentences. Also included are modified assessments. Students will have the same words and can take the same quizzes-- just with fewer words to master.
Many fun activities can follow vocabulary acquisition!
