Supporting Indigenous Resources for Inclusive Learning for Elementary and High School Students

This learning resources uses comprehension reading strategies: connection, visualization, question, and infer.

Assessment rubrics are customized for each lesson.

There is one page of some loose "comprehension questions" but for the most part this resource focuses on deeper understanding of the subject matter through reading strategies: connection, visualization, questioning, transforming, and inferring.

Students will describe connections they make with specific parts in the story.

They are challenged to document questions they wonder about and articulate why their questions would support their learning or allow them to develop deeper meaning.

They are asked to document their understanding of residential schools before reading Sugar Falls and then asked if their understanding has changed after reading the story.

Students are asked to identify parts of the story that are left unsaid/unfinished, or the actions of the characters that require interpretation, students are also asked to describe what they may mean. (Infer)

Specific Big Ideas from BC's New Curriculum Grades 8-12, that pertain to this novel study, have been identified and listed for assessment purposes.
