This is an engaging, informative and eye-opening activity. The students have an opportunity to explore the prevalence of sugar in the food they eat and the drinks they consume. I have used this activity in my middle years health classes as well as my grade 10-12 Biology classes. Students LOVE this lab activity and they are usually shocked by just how much sugar there is in the food they consume everyday. I uploaded this activity as a word document, so feel free to edit it so it works best for you and your students.
Various Food/Drink Products
The students' mission is to pick at least 15 different food items and calculate how many teaspoons of sugar are in the entire product. They will then be expected to take a photograph of the food with the proper amount of sugar cubes beside the product. We want to raise awareness about the hidden sugar that is packed into numerous food products!
