This summary writing focuses students on first identifying the main idea of a passage, then building a summary based on that.
First, have students read for 10-15 minutes. I have students read from a chapter book they picked out; you can use whatever text you'd like. Then, signal students to begin the page by writing the main idea of what they just read. They will finish by writing a short summary.
This works great as an early assessment to connect Main Idea and Summarizing, since the two are so related.
