This graphic organizer will help students use the main idea and details to summarize a text (fiction/non-fiction). Use the following analogy: the roof:main idea. It is the overall theme of the text. The details are like the main structure of the house. The details "hold up" the main idea. Once students have entered their notes, they can use the notes to write a summary of the text. I have found this model an effective visual that students remember and use to write summaries while determining the main idea and details.
