This mini-lesson on summarizing uses the NPR Story Corps broadcast "A Victim Treats His Mugger Right," about a New York social worker who takes a young mugger to dinner and gives him his coat. The product includes a graphic organizer for summarizing, discussion prompts and directions for composing a written reflection.
This story and the broadcast are available at this link:
I have included the story text as a preview and an MP3 of the broadcast as well.
This is a short, high interest story that raises interesting moral and social questions. It is appropriate for upper middle or high school age students. It has been a success with my students in urban schools.
