PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Summarizing Fiction: This 45-slide PowerPoint is a step-by-step presentation that teaches students how to summarize fiction. It uses the ice cream sundae approach. Students are taught that a good summary should include:
-characters & settings (banana halves)
-beginning (scoop of ice cream )
-problem (topping on the 1st ice cream scoop)
-middle (scoop of ice cream )
-events related to the problem (topping on the 2nd ice cream scoop)
-end (scoop of ice cream)
-solution to the problem (topping on the 3rd ice cream scoop)
-theme (cherry on top)

After the parts of a good summary are introduced, the PowerPoint concludes with four opportunities to summarize fiction.

This file also includes a 5-page companion handout! Students can write on the handout, recording answers, as you progress through the PowerPoint!

Summarizing Practice #1- Read "The Emporer's New Clothes" (story website listed) to your students and then the story is summarized by identifying each part on the parts of the sundae.

Summarizing Practice #2, #3, and #4- Read chapters from the book Sideways Stories from Wayside School and summarize. The answers appear on the PowerPoint.

****PLEASE NOTE!!!***** YOU WILL NEED THE BOOK "Sideways Stories from Wayside School" by Louis Sachar IN ORDER TO PROGRESS THROUGH THE FINAL TEN SLIDES OF THIS POWERPOINT! (You will read three very short chapters to your students, and then students will apply the skills they learned earlier in the PowerPoint to summarize the chapter!)

This PowerPoint is fully animated so that you only advance when the teacher clicks the mouse.

Check out the preview! (But remember, the preview is in a PDF format, and the product is truly an interactive PowerPoint with full animation.)

This PowerPoint cannot be edited due to the copyright requirements made by the contributing artists (clip art, font, background).
