My students always had trouble writing a well-written summary. I came across the IVF strategy and created a graphic organizer to help teach my students how to organize and write a summary for both fiction and nonfiction. The IVF (Identify the story, Verb- is it telling, explaining, giving directions, etc., and Finish thought) helps students create a strong topic sentence for their summary. Once they complete the first page, then they think about the main events or the important facts in the beginning, middle and end and jot them down in the organizer. Once they have all of that, they can put it altogether for their summary.
I have included the word document so that you can edit as you see fit for your students.
I can't express how much this organizer helped my students, not only with their written summary but with orally giving a summary as well.
