Description

These four print-and-go tri-folds target the skill of summarizing a nonfiction text. Use these tri-folds over the course of 4 days to provide targeted instruction on this topic.

As I was creating these tri-folds, I pictured myself using them with small groups of students. Specifically, I envisioned sitting around a table with a group of students who needed some targeted instruction and additional opportunities to practice writing a nonfiction summary. That being said, however, you can also successfully use these tri-folds in a large group setting or assign them as independent work.

These summarizing nonfiction trifolds progress from basic to more complex. Answer keys are included, along with additional teacher notes for EACH tri-fold. CHECK OUT THE PREVIEW to get a good feel for what you will get if you choose to purchase this resource.

Tri-fold #1: This initial tri-fold focuses on teaching students how to write a strong main idea sentence to create the first sentence of their nonfiction summary. I tell my students that knowing the right combination can “unlock" the main idea sentence in a nonfiction summary. "The right combination” is listed on Panel A: identify the text, verb, topic, and big idea. On Panel B, students are given a list of strong verbs. Panels B through E contain nonfiction reading passages. After reading each passage, students practice writing a main idea sentence to accompany the passage.

Tri-fold #2: While tri-fold #1 focuses on writing the main idea sentence that begins a nonfiction summary, tri-fold #2 focuses on choosing two or three important details to properly complete a summary. Panel A is the teaching panel, where students follow the thought process of a young girl writing a summary. Her complete summary is written at the bottom of the panel to provide an example for students. Panels B and C include two practice passages. After reading the passages, students should write a complete summary with the main idea sentence and 2-3 detail sentences.

Tri-fold #3: No new instruction is included in this tri-fold. The main purpose of this tri-fold is to provide multiple practice opportunities for students to gain confidence in their ability to write nonfiction summaries. This booklet includes three reading passages. Therefore, it is set up perfectly for the I Do, We Do, You Do teaching model. (Detailed instructions are given for those teachers who are not familiar with this teaching model.)

Tri-fold #4: This tri-fold is set up exactly like tri-fold #3. Again, the main purpose of this tri-fold is to provide multiple practice opportunities for students to gain confidence in their ability to write nonfiction summaries. This booklet includes three reading passages.
