Summarizing, Paraphrasing, and Directly Quoting Carousel--a STEM ELA lesson → Editable Files! Revised in July 2016!
So much fun! And so much better than a worksheet! For this activity, you will need sticky notes—and, possibly, colored dot stickers (these are really optional).
If your students have some familiarity with APA citations, they will truly benefit from this activity. With a partner, each student will travel with a quick guide and a set of sticky notes to summarize, paraphrase, or directly quote from sources. They’ll practice these source integration strategies—and they’ll also practice giving credit to their sources with in-text citations.
After students have completed making citations, they’ll work with a partner to use green and red dots to comment on their classmates’ accuracy.
The original text used in this activity comes from the Grand Challenges for Engineering--this is a great STEM activity for all the ELA teachers out there!
