Practice to Progress: An intervention program that targets reading comprehension skills
Regardless of their reading level, all students in your class can summarize a text. This resource makes it possible by eliminating some unnecessary obstacles that often prevent some students from practicing and mastering summarizing. With the right texts, support, and strategies, your students can show mastery in a way that suits their strengths.
1.) Differentiated Reading Passages: This resource contains 10 differentiated passages (30 total passages) for students reading below grade level who need more practice summarizing a text. The reading level takes into account the subject matter, sentence length, vocabulary, content, grammatical structure, word count, etc. Each passage includes a discreet symbol that indicates its reading level. There are three levels of each passage so you can easily differentiate with your intervention students.
2.) Differentiated Questions: The scaffolded questions allow you to determine the level of support or independence that each student needs. Students can complete oral guided questions (most support), guided questions, or short-answer questions (least support) in whole-class, small group, or 1:1 settings. With these options, you can easily modify or adapt the task, objective, and your lesson in order to meet the needs of each student.
3.) Re-Teaching Mini-Lessons with Teacher Scripts: In this resource, you will also find re-teaching mini-lessons with scripts so that you (or an interventionist) know exactly what to say and how to deliver the lesson to your students when you pull them for small groups or 1:1 intervention. There are three versions of the script that vary with the setting and level of support needed by the student. The scripts contain explicit instructions to help you re-teach the content. You can use my exact words or use them as a model to plan your own re-teaching.
4.) Intervention Documentation and Progress Monitoring: Documentation and progress monitoring is the foundation of the RTI framework. This resource provides you with the tools to document student performance and monitor progress so that you can make informed decisions. These reporting tools can be used to set new or different academic goals, adapt instruction, and provide meaningful feedback to students, parents, and administration.
5.) Anchor Chart: I've also included a printable anchor chart or poster that you can use to guide your instruction. You can print a copy to use with your re-teaching lesson, or you can print a copy for each student to use as a reference while they practice the skill.
6.) Additional Practice Questions: In addition to the questions that go along with each passage, additional practice questions are included as well. These are great to use a number of different ways. You can use them as a pre-assessment before students read the passages, to check understanding during your re-teaching mini-lesson, or after students read the passages for additional practice.
7.) Question Stems: To help students summarize a text, you can provide them with a set of question stems. You can pass out the question stems as bookmarks for students to use or ask them these questions in a small-group setting. These questions reinforce the SWBST strategy. You can choose to ask the questions with the provided passages or with students’ just-right chapter books.
