Reading is the process of making meaning from text. Good readers fluently engage in four critical comprehension sub-skills: summarizing, generating questions, clarifying meanings, and inferring. When readers summarize literary texts, they are paraphrasing the main events. To summarize is to retell the most important aspects of the plot: problem, solution, and main events.
The 30 questions on these task cards are designed to pull students’ thoughts right to the mini-skills that good readers do naturally. Some of the questions ask basic and straightforward information that forms the basis of a good summary. What is the problem? What is the solution? Other questions ask students to analyze summaries to find the best summary – the one that includes the problem, solution, and main events from the beginning, middle, and end. Finally, there are questions that use graphic organizers to show the sequence of events and the plot structure.
