Summarize Informational Texts about September 11th (9/11). These summarizing task cards use a challenging expository text with 24 Total Questions on 12 Task Cards. A variety of questions, paragraphs, and graphic organizers help present the tragedy of the terror attack on 9/11.

WHO IS IT FOR?
The above-level informational text will challenge most 3rd grade and 4th grade students. It may serve better as a shared reading.

Most 5th-graders will struggle just enough with this text in a paired or group reading station.

6th-graders should be able to complete these task cards independently.

This Lexile level is also just right for 7th-grade and 8th-grade remediation groups.

SUMMARIZING
Reading is the process of making meaning from text. Good readers fluently engage in four critical comprehension sub-skills: summarizing, generating questions, clarifying meanings, and inferring. When readers summarize literary texts, they are paraphrasing the main events. To summarize is to retell the most important aspects of the plot: problem, solution, and main events.

SCAFFOLDED QUESTIONS
The 24 questions on these task cards are designed to scaffold students through the summarizing mini-skills that good readers do naturally. This includes identifying important details, determining the main idea, and summarizing sections of informational text.

Finally, there are questions that use graphic organizers. These questions ask students to analyze details and determine the best summary of ideas and details.
