I use this graphic organizer to help my middle school students analyze texts. This works especially well for short stories, but also novels. This is a good way to prepare students for plot diagrams, or extend a plot diagram.
Most importantly, this gets students in the habit of supporting their claims with text evidence!
The Graphic Organizer reads "Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then," with descriptive questions underneath: Who is the main character, What did the character want? What is the main problem? How did the character solve the problem? What was the main resolution?
