If you're looking for a fun new way to help your student's write summaries, this is it! This simple, but engaging, post-reading activity encourages students to focus only on the most important ideas of a text and to practice writing in different contexts for different audiences.
Students write a "social media" post to summarize a text in a few sentences and conclude the post with a hashtag. They also get the opportunity to reinforce their summary with a picture.
This activity is certain to engage and excite your students!!
-Review important vocabulary from the text that they should use in their writing.
-Explain the meaning of "hashtag," "social media," "summary" if necessary.
-Provide students with sentence frames such as... "In (Title), (character)..." or "The main idea is..."
-Brainstorm a hashtag as a class for everyone to use based on the theme of the text.
-Post students' writing around the classroom or in the hallway so that they can "like" and "comment" on others' posts. (Space for this is included in the activity.)
Check out my PPT template for digitally created "social media" posts to use technology. This activity could be a first draft for a digital final draft.
