As a teacher, this assessments allows you to individually track your students progress towards one specific skill (summary creation). This assessment is in a state testing format, and the assessment obtains a common core standards page highlighting key standards met with this assessment.
This assessment requires students to answer questions related to the main elements that make up a good summary, asks students to identify the 5 W's in a short story in testing format, requires students to fill out a graphic organizer using the 5 W's to guide the process of creating a summary, requires students to pick out details in the passage not needed in a summary, and the final component requires the students to create their own summary using the graphic organizer provided.
I use this assessment after I teach the peanut butter and jelly summary lesson on my TPT page. I like the structure of this assessment because it requires the students to answer questions specifically related to summaries in a state testing format, requires students to read a passage similar to what they receive on a state test, and requires students to apply their skills by creating their own summary.
