Growing Readers DC presents a summary guide of Dork Diaries: Tales from a NOT-SO-Fabulous Life. It is a wonderful teen dramedy about fitting in, finding friends and flirting with boys. If your students liked Diary of a Wimpy Kid, or Big Nate they are going to love this series. In our 7th grade literacy classroom this year, it is the most popular book amongst the girls, by far. The style of this book lends itself to a wide range of readers. Anyone from a precocious 3rd grader to a struggling 8th grader would enjoy and benefit from this book.
Dork Diaries is a Level V (Lexile 890) book about a girl named Nikki Maxwell. It is accessible to many levels of readers because it features drawings, short chapters and first-person point of view. Nikki is a middle school student who just transferred into a private school. She initially lacks self-confidence and struggles to fit in, especially amongst the other girls. There are several problems that she faces throughout the story: making new friends, liking boys, dealing with her family and navigating the mean girls. As the story progresses, Nikki becomes more confident and more self-assured and readers need to be able to identify these shifts.
This free summary guide is a compliment to our other products in this series. We’ve also written six guided reading lessons that focus on developing students’ abilities to identify the plot and analyze character change.
