Attached is a summary one pager for students who are learning to write summaries at the middle school level or need a quick review.
Begin by having students read a common passage or article. Next encourage students to close their ideas and think about an important idea from the passage and illustrate it in the space provided.
Next guide students to go back to the passage or article and highlight, underline or circle key ideas and important supporting details.
Show students how marking the text can be helpful in providing the details needed for planning or outlining a summary by having students take highlighted information and place it in the next section of the one pager.
Lastly guide students to take their outline and make complete sentences in the summary section of the paper.
**This tool should be seen as a scaffold, which in time would not be necessary for students to successfully write summaries.
***Upon repeated uses of this tool provide less support at each step encouraging independence in completing the one pager.
