Phonics and Word Recognition

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.1.3b Decode regularly spelled one-syllable words.

❤️ You can use this set in conjunction with my first set that focuses on c-v-c words to make the first set harder gradually and then progress to just this set. The link for level one is below.

❤️ Optional recording sheets for students to write the words they form are included.

Optional award certificates are included as well.

❤️ Another Way to Play – Real or Nonsense? – Individual or Partner Activity

Students pick an onset swimmer and see which words they can create with one swimming pool gameboard. They record the real words in the first column and the nonsense words in the second column. I have included recording sheets set up for this activity.

❤️ Optional: Decorate a file folder box lid with the backyard scenery, and place the swimmers in the lid. Simply fold each sheet of scenery lengthwise down the middle and place over the edges of the lid. You could line the lid with green construction paper.

The swimmers can be waiting in the backyard to go swimming!

Cut the swimmer sheets on the paper cutter into 12 square cards each. Swimmers can simply be placed text side down, and students draw a swimmer card and match it to a pool on their gameboard that has a rime that makes a word, or you can create the backyard box. Then the student blends the onset (beginning sound) that is on the swimmer to the rimes (word chunks) that are on the pools. The swimmers can be placed in any pool that can be made into a word. The winner is the first student to fill the pools on his or her gameboard. This activity can grow with your students at various levels of blending onsets and rimes.
