The one thing that bothers me the most about Summer Vacation is when the kids come back... Somehow, they've seemed to forget EVERYTHING they've learned in the grade before. You have to spend at least a month reviewing to get them back to where they left off and it's a terrible waste of time! Am I the only one that feels this way?
If you're like me, a solid packet of skills for students to review over the Summer would be a lifesaver AND time saver! So to prevent this Summer Slide, I created this product, Splish Splash: Kinder Summer Fun! It's a set of no-prep printables and activities that families can do with their child to keep their learned skills at the front of their minds. This way, hopefully teachers won't have to spend their precious time reviewing what they've already been taught.
Included in this more than 100-page packet, you'll find many components that will assist you in the making of the review packet and also for the parents. There are parent pages throughout to explain what to do with the printables and activities, and tips on how to best help their child complete them.
More specifically, the packet is divided into six basic sections:
~Summer Skill Review Game: Here parents will find a reward system they can use to help motivate their child to complete their Summer Review packet. There is a board game kids play and color in squares upon the completion of activities. I've included three pages of "Reward Coupons" that parents can give their child when a determined amount of review work is completed. There are blank coupons parents can fill in with their own rewards if they wish.
~The Joy of Reading: This section includes a reading log for students to keep track of time spent reading alone or being read to. There is also a set of question cards parents can use after reading to build their child's comprehension. The printables included are comprehension maps and activities that can be used with any book their child reads. There are 9 comprehension printables.
~Math Skill Pages: Here parents will find 10 math skill pages. All of the topics are review, so they should be able to be done independently. If their child has difficulty, they will know that is an area they may need to work more on. All the skills are Common Core aligned to Kinder Standards. The printables focus on counting to 100, basic addition, comparing numbers, shapes, time, missing addends, and more!
~Writing Journal: There are two sets of writing papers, plain lines and ones with writing lines. This way you or the parents can choose which to use with the child. There is also a topic sheet that will help parents to guide their child through their writing, or students can choose their own topic. There's a cover page to put these together into a journal booklet.
~First Grade Sight Words: This section includes a list of First Grade Dolch Words, so students can get a head start on words they will be learning in First Grade. There are flashcards with the words and students can color a picture under each word once it's read correctly. There are four pictures under each word. This will give the students many chances for reading the words. There are also no-prep activity printables, that the students roll a dice and write the sight words. A paper dice pattern is provided.
~Basic Skill Pages: There are 20 pages split into 2 and 3 sections. Each pages has a mixture of math, reading and writing activities. There are addition and counting problems, along with many phonics skills for the students to practice. Again, these skills are ones the students should have already learned; they are also Common Core aligned for Kinders.
A few of the extras included are:
~ a parent letter from you
~ section dividers for you that explain the section
~ section dividers for parents that explain and give tips for learning
~ gift tags, should you wish to give this packet as an End-of-the-Year gift.
~ a completion certificate
~ suggestions on how to present this to the parents/children
Please see the preview for a glimpse at each section included. The students will like to learn and practice over the Summer with these engaging no-prep activities and printables!
