Summer time is a great time to dig into some good books!
I’ve used this reading response idea to keep my students excited about reading. Students create these story pails to record their thinking about a book. First we created the construction paper pails by cutting the shape of the pail using two colored papers and stapling them together on the sides and bottom. That way you can insert the shovels.
Students respond to their book by telling about the characters and setting. They give a short summary of the book and tell their opinion. These are all written on the shovels which they place inside the bucket. They decorate the front of the bucket with a picture of the book and write the book’s title and author. I always make sure they get a chance to share their book reports. We make a sand pail snack to enjoy while we listen to each other present. An easy recipe for students to read and follow is included.
