These Core Word Adapted Books and Emergent Readers for Summer can be used in a variety of ways. They can be used as “print and go” books with no need for Velcro or laminate. It can be printed in black and white or color. When used as “print and go”, students can cut and paste the icons.

The adapted books can also be laminated with Velcro added for repeated use.

The books are differentiated for varied learner abilities. There are two types of books for each of the 6 books. There are 6 “build a sentence” books which require students to match the core word icon and the noun icon to create the sentence describing the picture. Students take the icon from the left (previous page) and move it to the page on the right. This helps to practice the left-right progression needed for early literacy skills. There are also 6 emergent reader books that include a complete sentence in words describing the picture. The emergent reader books include the core word, noun, and summer icons that can be matched to the pages as well. You can choose which type of vocabulary you would like to focus on for your students, and have them match one type of the aforementioned icons.
