During the summer, I hold a summer enrichment reading club for some students. I usually have about five or six students in the club. Each student in the reading club is given a book and an assignment sheet at the very end of the school year. He or she is to read the book and complete the assignment before we meet as a club.
At the book club meetings, the students discuss the work they completed on the sheet and the book they have all read. I also incorporate spelling, writing and math lessons based on the books chosen as well. They are then given the next book and assignment. I usually meet about five times over the summer.
Included in this packet are the assignment sheets for the following books:
Nate the Great
Young Cam Jansen and the Baseball Mystery
Frog and Toad Are Friends
The Best Seat in Second Grade
Get Ready for Second Grade, Amber Brown
Each assignment includes four sections. There are three comprehension questions, five vocabulary words to define, three evaluation questions that have the student relate things from the story to their own lives, and an application question or mini project.
