Summer Fraction Games

Use this packet of two Ice Cream Activities during summer classes or place them in a take-home packet for your students to work on while on vacation. Students will have a fun time reviewing the concept of Equivalent Fractions through a Memory Game and a Color, Cut & Match activity.

MEMORY GAME

Number of Players: 2 or more
Objective of the Game: To win the most pairs
Contents: 20 cards

Shuffle the cards and lay out all the cards face down, so that no cards overlap. The first player turns over any two cards, one after the other, leaving the first card face up while the second card is turned. If the two cards make a pair, then the player takes the cards and puts them face down in front of them in a pile and has another turn.

The player’s turn ends when the two cards turned over do not match or make a pair. After a pause for all players to see, these two cards must be laid face down again in exactly the same position. It is then the next player’s turn.

When cards are turned over, it is important for players to remember where they are. Play continues until all the cards have been taken. The player with the most pairs is the winner.

COLOR, CUT AND MATCH

Objective: To pair the cups with their matching scoops of ice cream
Contents: 20 cards

1. Print the pages and distribute to students.
2. Students color the cups and scoops of ice cream.
3. Students cut the cups and scoops after coloring them.
4. Students match the cups and scoops by determining whether the fractions written on them are equivalent fractions. The matching cups and scoops are glued together.
5. The matching cups and scoops can be glued on cardstock and cut again. They will make an interesting display in the Math center bulletin board.

NOTE: The two activities use the same set of equivalent fractions - 10 pairs. I included a list that can be printed and used as Answer Key.
