Do your students need help learning about word problems? Then this is the game for you.
Word problems can be quite tedious until kids learn to look for what the is happening in the story problem. Once they learn to pay attention to what is happening in the problem rather than focusing only on the numbers, they will be true word problem solvers!
There are 20 different word problems that the students will have to determine whether they will need to add, subtract, add and then add again, or subtract and subtract again in order to solve the problem. The solution cards are included. Students will have to determine which solution sentence matches the story. The main thing is to get them to start thinking about what is happening in the story problem. Is the number getting smaller or larger?
The activity can be used in several different ways. It could be used as a mini-lesson and then put in a center for additional practice. Students can use this as an individual activity or work with a partner to place the cards with the correct number action card. It can also be used as an assessment. The cards could be used during small group instruction or as a warm-up activity. To make the game more fun, both students could have a set of the cards and race to see who could match up the cards the quickest.
