Writing is a skill that requires daily practice. Throughout the school year, I keep monthly journals for each of my students. After many years of experience, I have found that engaging students in daily writing, it helps them develop fine motor skills, it encourages them to gather thoughts, practice proper letter formation and builds self confidence. It’s amazing how they come in at the beginning of Pre-K from not knowing how to hold a pencil or crayon, to drawing lines to pictures, and writing their own words(sentences).
This product was designed for students to continue daily writing practice during the summer. Teachers can send these home for “Summer Home-Learning” or if parents would like to use these during the summer.
In this “Summer Journal” you will find “Sentence Starters”( prompts) to help students begin writing a sentence. These prompts will help students begin and complete sentences. These sentence starters are just ideas for students to write about it. I have included blank sheets for children to use on their own. At the bottom of each page is also a line for students to write the date of each entry.
Also, included in this download is a poster, “I can be a 5 Star Writer”. This chart is a visual support to remind students to use a capital letter at the beginning of a sentence, use finger space between words, sound out words to spell, use punctuation, and to draw a picture about the sentence.
I have also provided two posters, “I can write about…” for students to use to help them gather ideas of what they can write about. I allow my students to write freely in my class, but I do provide them with prompts every now and then and these posters.
The front page, “My Summer Journal,” can be colored or you can use yellow shredded paper to cover the sun and then color the border. This will be the cover of the journal. This is what I do with my students.
I hope your students/child enjoy using this “Summer Journal.” This is a great keepsake for years to come. They will look at their journals one day and will read about the memories they made this summer!
