Who can you use these journals with?
I use these writing journals with my students on the life skills curriculum who need more of a challenge during writing workshop. However, these would be perfect to use with any beginning writer. I like to use these with students who are almost ready to use word prompts but still need a visual to help them come up with ideas.
How do I use these journals?
Before I begin using these journals with my students; I teach them what the graphic organizer means and have them brainstorm out loud with me. I tell them that the who means the person or animal that is in their sentence. The what is “what is the who doing” and the where is the place of the sentence. I then have my students put the three together and make a sentence. I have included an example on the next page. The student will need to use their ability to infer to determine the “who” and the “what”. The “where” is explicitly given to them by the picture. These journals would also be great to use as a whole group or small group brainstorming activity.
