Recess Themed Addition Facts to 10

(There is a link below for facts from 11-20.)

Common Core: Add and Subtract within 20

• CCSS.Math.Content.1.OA.C.6 Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 – 4 = 13 – 3 – 1 = 10 – 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 – 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).
• CCSS.Math.Content.2.OA.B.2 Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies.2 By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.

Students are asked to write each number sentence.
An optional addition table is provided to help students.
Recording sheets are included.
Answer keys are provided so you can make these task cards self-correcting.

If you have not used task cards before, here are some ways to use them:

1. Place one task card at each of 30 desks, tables, or other areas in the room. Put 1 student at each desk or table. At a signal, students at each table complete the task card at that particular table, being sure to record it next to the corresponding number on their answer sheets. When everyone has finished answering that task card, give the signal again. Students move to the next desk or table and complete that task card. Give the signal again, and students advance to the next table, and so on until all students have completed all of the task cards. Students enjoy moving around rather than sitting at a desk or table to complete an entire worksheet at once.

2. You can hole punch each card in the upper left hand corner and put them on a binder ring. That way, individual students or pairs of students can work on a set of task cards. The answer key can be provided to make them self-correcting.

3. You could place the task cards in different locations around the room to allow students to move around as they complete their answer sheets. As they find each card, they look for the corresponding number on their answer sheets. Provide students with the answer key if you’d like to make them self-correcting. Keep each set in a baggie when not in use.

4. Use with any gameboard that requires dice or a spinner. Students need to provide the correct answer to a task card before advancing on the game board.

5. If a teacher is working with a small group of students, they could respond orally, or students could respond on white boards or individual chalkboards.

6. You could laminate them, and ask students to use erasable markers to answer.
