Description
Help your middle school students think about math in different ways as they increase their math flexibility with these August Math Calendar dates and number puzzles!
The basic idea of Math Date Warm Ups is to use the date to include a little extra math in the day, reinforce math concepts, and possibly use as extensions or enrichment.
- Each part of the date is written as an expression.
- For example, August 16, 2023, could be: 2^3 / 2^2 • 4 / 46 ÷ 2
- I’ve found it helpful to repeat tricky facts in the dates, so students see them over and over. For example, many (most?) students believe the number 51 is prime. However, after seeing 51/3 as the expression for 17 during 2017, they became better at remembering that 51 is actually divisible!
Some of the concepts include:
- Exponents
- Order of operations
- Division and multiplication facts
- Square roots
Using the August calendar math dates:
- Some days the date might just be there on the board for students to observe and mentally note that the expression is equal to the numbers in the date (this is even great in a non-math class!).
- Other days you might use the date as a warm-up and ask students to show you their solutions
- This is a great way to address equivalent expressions and MANY other concepts as a type of spiral review throughout the entire year!
- The number puzzles can be used in math centers, for fast finishers, or for sub days.
In this August Calendar Math Dates resource, you get:
1) A list of dates (month and day) for August
- Includes weekends - you can always put one of the weekend dates on the board during the week, and see if your students notice that you made a “mistake.”
- When I write the date on the board, I also use the year – I’ve included some year ideas for you (item #5 below).
2) A blank August calendar for students – they can use this to record/solve the date each day and add their own math expressions for the dates.
3) A Find a Number puzzle using August dates of events in history
4) Date cards, with a month and day card for every day
- You can use them to display the whole date on the whiteboard, or you can just use the day cards on the calendar.
5) Ten year cards, for each year 2025 – 2030
6) 2 bonus puzzles using the dates from August, 2019
What teachers are saying about the full-year bundle Math Dates resource:
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️“I LOVE the variety of problems that these have on them. I use for both my 7th, 8th and Applied Math class. I assign it at the beginning of the month to be due at the end of the month. They can work on it when they finish class work early or when they have study. There is always math to work on!”
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️"My kids never ask me the date anymore :D They also ask about new math skills they don't know when they see them pop up (I teach 6-8) and it's fun to see them try to think through it!"
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ "I like how I can incorporate teaching new concepts while using this resource daily."
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️"My kids LOVE coming in and discussing how to solve these for the date!"
