These word problems are differentiated with three different versions so that you can work on problem solving skills with your students at all levels! Use this simple guide to determine which set of problems is best for each student. Just look for the level icon at the top of each page.

Students can work their way through each of the three levels or they can complete just the level that is at their developmental level. Levels Include:

• Shell: basic problem-solving skills. Mostly single-step word problems with a few two-step problems. Multiplication and division of whole numbers, decimals and fractions. Basic story problem structure with result unknown in most problems. Some remainders to interpret. Basic measurement conversion and volume problem included. All problems can be solved using concrete visual models.
  
• Sunglasses: intermediate problem-solving skills. Single and multi-step word problems. Mixed operations with whole numbers, fractions and decimals. Mixed word problem structure with start unknown, change unknown and result unknown as well as compare problems and missing factor multiplication and multiplicative compare. Interpret the remainder. Bar models concrete visuals models as well as more abstract models can be used. Volume and measurement conversion included.
  
• Ice Cream: advanced problem-solving skills. Multi-step word problems. Addition and Subtraction within 100,000. Mixed word problem structures with unknown in all places as well as compare problems, most which require bar models to solve. Missing factor and division problems included. Most multi-step problems are two and three-step problems. Interpret the remainder problems included as well as more challenging measurement conversion and volume problems. Addition, subtraction and multiplication of fractions and mixed numbers. Abstract visual models as well as variables should be used to solve these problems.
