Creating patterns with shapes and colors is fun, but creating patterns with bright and colorful summer graphics is much more than just fun!! It is important for students to be able to identify, create, complete, and extend patterns in order to obtain a solid foundation in math. This patterns mini-unit is perfect for introducing, teaching and reinforcing this skill. This unit includes differentiated activities and material for whole group, small group, centers, and independent learning.
Summer Patterns is a hands-on math unit which is geared toward students in Pre-K, Kindergarten, 1st and maybe even 2nd grade who are working on patterns. The unit includes picture cards to create patterns for whole group or small group. They work great in a pocket chart and could also be used as a math station. I also included Letter cards for A, B, and C for labeling patterns. This download contains pattern strip puzzles and learning mats-these work great at centers, during small group, or independent work. The learning mat promotes higher-order thinking by allowing students to create and explain their own pattern. All activities are also provided in black and white for cheaper printing options.
In addition to the activities listed above, the unit also contains 8 pages of printables that coincide with the activities and reinforce pattern skills. The printables focus on the 4 “I Can” statements that cover patterns. I can recognize a pattern. I can create a pattern. I can complete a pattern. I can extend a pattern. The various printable activities were created at many different levels and various formats in order to meet the needs of all students in your class regardless of level or learning style. You can use them as an extension to math stations, independent practice, homework or even as assessments.
