These Summer Reading Activities for your Middle School students are an excellent way to take your summer reading program to the next level! Simply print, staple, and send your students off for the summer with enriching reading activities, graphic organizers, and rubrics that work with ANY novel you assign them!
We created this Summer Reading Packet with the intention of making your students' summer reading assignments more meaningful. There are a few ways you can use this packet with your class. You can assign students an essay question that goes with their summer reading book, so you can utilize the Essay Writing Format Handout and Essay Graphic Organizers. You can have them use all of our graphic organizers to help them write an essay on their own in response to their book that they bring to class with them the first week of school. You can also use the fun activities included in this packet and assign an essay once you get back to school! Feel free to mold this packet to fit your precise need.
*Please note that some resources in this packet work in conjunction with an essay question that you would need to assign in addition to just the reading of the summer reading book. There a multiple other resources included that do not require an essay question in order to be utilized.

RUBRICS FOR ALL ACTIVITIES
EVIDENCE BASED WRITING FORMAT
: This is a great, detailed resource that you can send home with students that reviews all elements of a multi-paragraph essay. You can also review this handout with students before they take off for the summer.
SAMPLE RESPONSE TO LITERATURE (ESSAY)
: A quality piece of writing that models for students where we want their writing to go. This example has each element of an essay broken down and color-coded on the essay itself.
: This resource allows students to keep track of important evidence they find throughout their reading that will help them compose their multi-paragraph essay. This is also a great resource to use throughout the year with other pieces of literature!
RESPONSE TO LITERATURE GRAPHIC ORGANIZER
: This is our fancy way of saying "Essay." This will help your students put the pieces of an essay together in a way that visually makes sense to them. You can have your students write their entire essay within this graphic organizer, or complete this GO and then compose their essay in a word document to be printed and brought to school. We've also included our essay rubric (a teacher favorite!).
: This fun activity that asks students to complete an Instagram profile for one of the characters in the novel. They use evidence from the text to support and explain their reasoning for the artistic choices they make. Rubric included with this one, too!
TIMELESS TEXT ACTIVITY
: Another activity to get students thinking about the text more critically. We also request that students provide evidence from the text. Again, a rubric is included for your convenience.
FINDING EVIDENCE & SETTING ACTIVITY
: An art-infused activity that includes drawing! Our students have loved this particular activity over the years that asks them to provide evidence from the text for their artistic choices for the setting of the book. Rubric included here as well.
CHARACTER CONNECTIONS ACTIVITY
: A final activity that has students analyze not only characters on their own, but also characters in relationship to one another. Students think critically and deeply with this activity. Of course we included a rubric for you!
