Product Description

Engage students in summer reading with this summer reading challenge! Students are asked to read at least 15 books, in different ways, throughout the summer months. Then, when they return to school after summer vacation, they return their summer reading log to their new teacher.

It is recommended that there is some kind of incentive for completed logs at the start of the school. In the past, one of my schools had a Water Day. This is where the local fire department came out, rigged their hoses up and gently spray the children. Another incentive could be to have an ice cream party and a whole afternoon of recess. The point is to encourage children to read throughout the summer so their reading skills do not fall back during the summer months.

What's Included?

  • 5 Pages of Summer Reading Card Ideas (a total of 80 cards to choose from!)
  • 2 Summer Reading Logs
  • Preparation Guide (with pictures to help you)

Preparation:

Option One:

Print off the set of cards for each student onto colorful paper. Ask the students to cut out the cards and choose a specific number of cards that they want (I’d recommend at least 25). They can also cut out ALL the cards! Students bring you the cards they chose (or all of them) and you put a hole punch in the top left corner. Students then get a Binder Ring and hook the cards onto it. Then, give students one of the reading logs to take home with their Binder Ring of reading activities. Send both the Binder Ring and the Reading Log home with students over summer break to complete!

Option Two:

If you want to avoid all the cutting and hole punching, you can print out the five pages of reading cards for each student and staple them to the reading log you believe is appropriate for your students. Send the reading log and the reading activity cards home with students to complete over summer break.
