Summer Reading Incentive Program! School wide! Summer Reading Challenge!
This kit contains everything you need to organize, implement and promote reading throughout the summer to avoid “summer slide”!
The Summer Reading Challenge is a way for you keep kids motivated to read all summer long! We all know that the only way to get better at reading is to read and read a lot.
At a year-end assembly for rising first to fifth graders, I would share with the kids what the challenge is all about. I would share the logs and discuss the importance of reading all summer. The challenge is to see who can read the most minutes over the summer. When school begins again there will be an assembly and a prize will be given to the student in each grade who has read the most minutes! Prizes can be determined by your school. Each top winner gets an award (included and editable) and I would suggest giving out gift certificates to the school book fair or gift card to a local bookstore. Approach the big book stores and see if they would be willing to donate either a book or a gift card. I always give a top prize to the student who read the most minutes in the whole school. There is an editable parent letter where you can add your school’s signature. Also included in the product are hyperlinks to websites to get or keep kids reading, as well as online book clubs and resources for access to more books. This is part of the parent letter. This, too, can go on the school’s website so that parents can have direct access to the links. I have created the book logs (see preview) and a sheet that parents must sign and return attesting to the number of minutes their child has read. Students do not turn in the logs to you, only the signed parent form. I always collected the sheets from the students during the first week of school and entered them into an Excel spreadsheet by grade level. Super easy! Super fun! Super motivating!
