How can I use this product?
Assign to students to use as a summer reading. Its design requires students to read a variety of text, in fiction and nonfiction, over a 60-day period.
What are students asked to do?
Students are asked to respond authentically to what they read through prompts that target a variety of literacy skills, including: making connections, analyzing story elements, vocabulary development, summarizing, making predictions, deciphering figurative language, comparing and contrasting information and story elements, recognizing cause and effect relationships, sequencing information in the form of time lines and graphic organizers, and researching.
How are the prompts organized?
Prompts are organized in the 60-day packet as a daily tasks. There is one prompt per day. Some prompts can be used for both fiction and nonfiction text, and some are more specific to one genre. Most of the prompts are repeated four times within the 60-day packet, with the exception of the two different story elements prompts. Those are each repeated twice, in order to break apart the skill and have students focus on setting and problem/solution separately. The prompts are coded so that students know which type of text they should be using with each prompt.
