This seven year summer reading program contains novel selections, assignments, and rubrics for a 6th-12th grade summer reading program. The program is carefully designed for students to build on their reading and writing skills from 6th-12th grade, particularly in a Christian school setting. The novels and assignments are carefully scaffolded so that they present grade-level appropriate and challenging texts and assignments that build from year to year. The assignments prompt students to analyze the literary works through a Biblical worldview. The program is united by taking students on a seven year journey to discover the 7 basic plot types found in novels. The study rests literary critic Christopher Booker's theory that the plot of all novels can be categorized into seven different types: Rags to Riches, Voyage and Return, Rebirth, Comedy, Tragedy, Overcoming the Monster, and Quest. Each grade level 6-12th has its own set of instructions and assignments carefully designed for that grade level. My hope is that this seven year journey will become something students look forward to continuing each summer!
