On Pinterest and many teachers blogs recently there have been uploads of Summer reading programs for our colleagues in the American school system. This is something that isn’t really done here in Australian Schools. As an Australian Teacher, I think it would be extremely beneficial for children to be given a reading program, including a small assignment to complete over the summer vacation. It is generally this time of year that children seem to go backwards in their learning as the reading and sight words of the previous year have been forgotten with the excitement of Holidays, Christmas and New Year Celebrations.
While this is not made to be a chore, it would be beneficial for children to have some sort of structured reading program to use while they are not at school. The option is there as to whether you want to have an assessment piece handed in at the start of school.
This pack is designed for Prep students, but if there is enough interest I will also design some, including activities for other grade levels.
These printables include a variety of fun activities related reading and a comprehensive list of recommended reading material for children who have completed their 1st year of formal schooling in Australia.
All books that are listed on the list are available online through Bookworld. I am in no way affiliated with Bookworld, they just have all the books!
