Summer School Curriculum: The Outsiders (3-Week Unit)
Common Core Aligned
Teaching summer school? This 3-week unit includes everything you need. Just print-and-go so you can enjoy your summer break!
This is a complete 3-week unit for the novel "The Outsiders" by S.E. Hinton. I have used these plans successfully to teach "The Outsiders" in both 7th and 8th grades, as well as Summer School and Reading AIS (Academic Intervention Services).
This unit requires close reading and includes critical thinking questions that compel students to extrapolate relevant and appropriate inferences from the story. It is also structured for quick and easy integration of read-louds, shared reading, independent reading, guided reading, interactive writing, shared writing, and independent writing, making this an ideal unit for the integration of Balanced Literacy, Academic Intervention Services, or tutoring.
These plans also include several opportunities for writing, all of which prepare students for meaningful class discussions about the themes of exclusion vs. inclusion, equality vs. inequality, and tolerance vs. acceptance.
This 78-page product includes:
-15 days of Teacher Plans, including guided reading questions, group work, class discussion starters, partner work, homework, and critical-thinking activities
-“Are You Ready to Rumble?” Obstacles of Life Relay Race (An activity that prompts class discussion about what it is like to be advantaged versus disadvantaged)
-Poem Analysis (3 poems to integrate with the reading of "The Outsiders")
-Short Literary Analysis Paper with a 60-point rubric
-6 graphic organizers to facilitate close reading and critical thinking
-Author’s Craft notes and prompts, including the effective use of characterization, mood, point of view, idioms, similes, hyperbole, flashback, imagery, plot, and verb/adverb combinations
-An 8-page escalator containing critical thinking questions about the text, prompting close reading, metacognition, and readiness for group discussions
-A 16-page Student Packet with Answer Key
A variety of activities, graphic organizers, structured worksheets, and group work projects lends itself well to differentiation, making this unit perfectly suited for inclusive classrooms.
