Looking to boost productivity this summer but not spend your summer planning and preparing? Check out this social skills program for higher functioning children who need some help with social skills :)
6 sessions that build up to a successful group Lego project at the end.
Included are the following: 6 hours of interactive and motivating lessons, measurable language goals for each lesson, introductory handouts for parents and teachers, and parent handouts after each lesson with tips on how to reinforce those skills at home. Almost every single thing is provided!!! Lesson 4 has an obstacle course activity, which will require some preparation in the speech room or other area. Lesson 5 requires some simple building materials such as paper clips, rubber bands and cotton balls (all optional).
Final session is optional.
For schools: This is a great resource to implement with your groups of social language students. Break up the lessons and you will have your sessions planned for months.
For private clinics: I usually host this group over a 6 week period of time (1 hour per week) over the summer, but it can be held at any time of the year. Great for boosting productivity. (I've often held social skills groups with an occupational therapist. This would be a great program to work with an OT as there is a lot of cutting, building, creating, and an obstacle course in the program)
This program includes interactive activities such as ROLE PLAYING, GAMES, VIDEOS, and CRAFT ACTIVITIES to keep lessons interesting and motivating! SAMPLE SCRIPT is also included in each lesson so you don't even have to prepare what to say -see preview (use if desired). This program is visually set up to easily pick out the different activities, which allows you to either follow along the lesson, or make the lesson your own.
The skills targeted in this program are the following:
• Proper greetings and farewells
• Eye contact
• Conversational skills
• Turn taking
• Topic maintenance
• Listening skills
• Body language
• Facial expressions
• Following directions
• Identifying feelings in self
• Recognizing feelings in others
• Critical thinking skills
• Problem solving
• Appropriate reactions to daily problems
Each lesson runs approximately 45-60 minutes long
*Lesson number 4 stresses empathy - defines it, provides guided discussion of it, and has activities that encourage kids to experience empathy. Empathy, in my opinion, is one of the most important thing a child (or anyone really) can learn. It will help socialization dramatically.
***The 6th lesson can be optional because it requires the purchase of a Lego set or additional time to prepare your own building activity***
Please leave me feedback! I would love to know what you think and what I can do to improve my product. Thank you! :)
