What educators are saying

The texts are engaging and the activities were very helpful during instruction of comprehension skills.
I used this for summer tutoring. It was a good review of skills. The font is a bit tough to read for old eyes, though.

Description

Teach and review reading skills using pictures AND teach students how to apply their skills to short reading passages! This summer add-on packet is perfect to review all of these skills at the end of the year!

***This resource is a companion to my huge Using Pictures to Teach Reading Skills Bundle! ***

This resource also includes a digital, Google Slides version, perfect for virtual learning and paperless practice!

With these 8 printable pages, students will have the opportunity to observe a picture and make inferences, ask questions, make predictions, etc., practice a reading skill based on the picture, and apply the reading skill to a short passage. There is ONE printable pages which covers each of the reading skills below (total of 8 pages):

Which reading skills are covered in this Using Pictures to Teach Reading Skills, Summer resource?

  • Inferencing
  • Main Idea
  • Cause & Effect
  • Compare & Contrast
  • Sequencing
  • Fact & Opinion
  • Story Elements
  • Point of View

There are three components to EACH page of this resource:

Observe It: This section includes the picture with plenty of white space around it. The white space is for students to make literal AND inferential observations. Take as many notes as you can, encourage students to stretch their thinking, and watch their inference skills grow with EVERY picture you observe! Examples of observations are included.

Answer It: This section has a task to complete that focuses on the reading skill AND relates to the picture in the “observe it” section.

Apply It: This section has a short story that loosely relates to the same topic shown in the picture (but does NOT represent the picture) and includes a task that relates to the reading skill focus.

The images print well in black and white. I do encourage you to project or show a color image for students so that they can make even more observations.

I have included an answer key, but PLEASE NOTE, students should be encouraged to come up with their own original answers. Since many of the tasks are open ended, there are many, many justifiable answers. These tasks are meant to encourage kids to think outside the box! You will be amazed at what they come up with.

I strongly suggest working through several of these pages as a whole group before allowing students to work independently on them-- particularly the "OBSERVE" section.

These printables are perfect for whole group or small group instruction, morning work, literacy centers, and more!

Ideal for Grades 3+ and Enrichment or Whole-Class 2nd grade

What are real teachers saying about this resource?

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “Using the pictures to teach reading skills- it is amazing center work that students can complete independently.  It is also something that I will model with my struggling readers in small group before we tackle a more challenging piece of text.  This is amazing differentiation." - Jennifer M.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “I absolutely love these picture reading activities! They provide such meaningful practice for the students but because of the context, they don't even realize how much deeper their learning is going. My students LOVE them! It's something different & engaging plus is allows scaffolds for students of all levels to feel successful. I highly recommend this resource!” - Kimberly H.
